Description

The last you'll see of woodlice from me for a while.

When I was doing my research I had to sex my woodlice before I could use them as subjects. Color was a fairly reliable indicator, as males tend to be a very dark brown and females are a lighter brown with stripes, but it's not at all foolproof- many males have the lighter coloration the females have (possible research for those looking for a topic- are these immature males, or somehow subordinate? Is color related to hormones? Woodlice have extremely poor vision, so why the color differences if not mate choice?).

The only way to know the sex of the woodlouse for certain is to put it under a microscope and look!

DUUUUUUUUDE, I picked so many woodlouse parts out of pitfall traps. I wish I had know there was a relatively easy way to know if I was looking at a male or female! Very cool.
